WV Sorcerer Productions Announces Live Evil by Dope Purple & Kawabata Makoto

WV Sorcerer Productions 巫唱片, the France/China-based avant-garde label, has announced Live Evil (WV126), a live album by Taiwanese psychedelic noise-rock band Dope Purple joined by Kawabata Makoto of Acid Mothers Temple. The album drops May 15 on limited coral pink vinyl and digital.

Three tracks, recorded June 14, 2025 at The Wall in Taipei. The set pulls from Dope Purple’s existing catalog — mutated, expanded, shoved through sheets of Kawabata’s guitar — and includes a previously unreleased piece, “LxOxVxE.”

Live Evil - Dope Purple & Kawabata Makoto

The Backstory

Kozma Liu, Dope Purple’s guitarist and vocalist, wrote the Bandcamp liner notes himself. They deserve quoting at length:

Before the performance, Kawabata Makoto downed half a bottle of 118-proof Kinmen Kaoliang. Dope Purple was already in trance as we stepped on stage. What followed was savage. A sonic vortex dragged the audience from cosmic psychedelia into the depths of noise-rock hell.

Liu mixed the recordings. The mastering was handled by Takeshi Yoshida (吉田武司), an engineer formerly associated with P.S.F. Records, the legendary Japanese underground label that defined a certain strain of uncompromising psychedelic noise for decades. That choice of mastering engineer is not incidental — it places Live Evil in a lineage.

The Physical Object

The vinyl edition is a 12” coral pink LP with a 4mm spine, 350g reverse board cover, and obi strip. Limited to 120 copies. At €21.80, it is priced fairly for a small-run import. Nine copies remain at time of writing.

The cover photo by Ping Xu, sleeve design by Hung Jiun Chi, and obi by Ruò Tán follow WV Sorcerer’s house aesthetic: stark, esoteric, unnerving.

Dope Purple + Kawabata Makoto

Dope Purple has been a mainstay of the Taiwanese underground for years — noise, psychedelia, metal, and drone ground together into something that resists easy genre tags. Kawabata Makoto needs little introduction: as the founder of Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O., he has spent three decades as one of the most prolific and singular guitarists in psychedelic music, anywhere.

The pairing makes sense. Both operate at the edge of control. Live Evil is what happens when neither side bothers to pull back.

Tracklist

  1. New Psyche & Beyond the Body (From the Void)
  2. LxOxVxE (All We Want)
  3. Dope Purple Haze (Cosmic Noisedelia)

Live Evil is available for pre-order now on WV Sorcerer Productions’ Bandcamp. For buyers outside the EU, the label recommends their Big Cartel shop to avoid additional charges.
